snow and closings

Four inches of snow usually isn't enough to make us close. There have been several accidents near us on the busier streets because of ice underneath the snow.

Therefore, we have decided to close today, Saturday Jan 21st.

Stay hom, stay safe. Knit and crochet, eat cookies and drink hot chocolate. Play in the snow and enjoy!

Needles

Do you have just one brand of needles that you will use? Or are you more selective and will use only circulars versus straights or vice-versa? Are you an Addi fanatic? or like Hiya, or Kollage's Square needles? Well, here's the new needle that you are seeing in the magazines.

If you are more adpative and willing to try new needles, we have just received the first shipment of Knitter's Pride Dreamz fixed circulars in 32". They feel really smooth. Each # is a different color and it appears that the colors follow through on the interchangeables as well. Stop in and see the them.

We also received a shipment of blocking wire sets. Need a set, give us a call!

Finishing

Are you a finisher? Or do you like to put the project aside until ou are "in the mood"? Some days I go one way and some the other. Lately I'm in a finishing mood.

my Plum Perfect Swirl 9 tucking in ends almost finished - needed a break

So I started another cowl for a gift. This one is Ridged Lace Cowl. I have modified the pattern to 207/208 stitches. this one is being worked in Cascade's Heritage Paints Fingering weight yarn.
Hopefully I can get this knit up quickly. Then I can finish another stash project while I'm in the mood.
It will pass quickly. I hope because I'd rather be knitting.

Calendars and Friday the 13th

I looked at the calendar this AM and - eek- tomorrow is Friday the 13th! Now I normally am not bothered by such things. Mostly because Honey and I met on Friday the 13th, Yep, it sure was. And it was Good Friday to boot. Maybe they cancelled each other out? Who knows? And the, what is normal anyway?

I really think the date surprised me because it took me exactly 12 days to make and finish a cowl for our newest granddaughter-in-law, ShyAnne. I had 3 skeins of a well-known yarn that I thought were all the same shade. To my chagrin I found out they weren't. The hard way I might add. Is there another way you ask? Lordy, lordy NO! I had knit the entire first skein and it was beautiful, lovely, soft and all those things that would make a perfect cowl for her.

So I got ambitious and added the second skein at around 12:30-1AM. Busy knitting away, I didn't notice the colorrrrrrrrrrrr was changing. Now I know to expect some slight differences in handpainted yarns but....

Then I looked at the tag. And realized that when I purchased this yarn 2 years ago that I had gotton 2 of one color and 1 of another. Of course, I had started with the 1 skein. So I ripped and ripped out the cowl. Did I mention that I was making "Time Warp"? It can be found on Ravelry and is a delightful cowl reminiscent of the Linen Stitch Scarf in that it uses a slip stitch pattern in a slighty different way.

So I started over knowing that the clock was ticking and I had a deadline. I thought the deadline was Friday, the 13th! So I began a different pattern. Again knitting as quickly as I could I got to the second skein on Saturday evening the 7th (after we had celebrated Serbian Christmas and I was too full of wonderful ethnic foods to even think of going to bed).

I joined the second skein and had knit at least an inch when I screamed gently ('cause Honey was watching yet another football game behind his eyelids, lol!). This skein, which was the same shade as the first was completely different than skein #2 (my first skein on this attempt). Where one was a real mix of colors including greens, this second one was pinks and purples. Oh no, here we go again.

I cried. I stamped my feet. I threw it into the corner - after removing my Addi Lace Turbos of course.

Then I picked myself up, went up the stairs to my craft room. As I entered the room I took a deep breath and told myself to be a big girl. These things happen especially when you are at a knitting show and surrounded by temptation. So I now had 3 skeins that I can turn into 3 sets of finglerless mitts I hope.

In the meantime, I looked through my stash to see if I had another yarn (ya think??) I could use or did it necessitate a midnight run to the shop? Think I haven't done that before? Yeah, right! Well, I found a beautiful color - can't spill the beans here - and I had 3 skeins of the same shade and color. And I began again. And last night at 11:45 I bound off the cowl. Tonite I will tuck ends and then wash and block it. I could have used a bulkier yarn. But she is such a tiny little thing that I wanted something soft and delicate for her.

Oh, and then I found out the deadline is next weekend. Isn't that how it goes? So enjoy today, give tomorrow's date no thought and keep on knitting.

I get to start another one tonite but I have the yarn and pattern all picked out. Shouldn't a problem, right?

Boxes.....

Am I a glutton for punishment or what? The "man in brown" visited twice today. And, oh the things he brought to our little shop. Shall I tempt you?

We received new colors of Malabrigo sock

See one you like? Or two or three?

Then we got some new Rios. One of the colors is Ravelry Red. I couldn't resist since I spend so much time on that website. Are you addicted to Ravelry too? They have so many ideas and temptations.

And then I found the Silky Merino - ah what can I say? It's so soft and silky. Yeah, sound redundant but when you've been unpacking yarn all day, the brain goes to mush. So here to tempt you are the new colors that really have to be seen to appreciate the tonal qualities.

Tried going to the Farm Show only to sit in traffic? Why not stop here instead?

Marching into the New Year

Yes, we are marching- they tell me it burns more calories! So I try when I am alone to march instead of walk. Don't know if it will help but....

Geez, it seems like the holidays were just here and now we are off and running into a new season. I'm so not ready for this. I don't have my winter knitting done yet. So here's the $64 dollar question - does your knitting have a season? I mean do you knit for winter all year round or do you knit seasonally?

Do you only knit with wool or alpaca? Do you use cottons, linens, bamboo or other plant fibers? Do you use blends? What's the consensus out there?

All the companies are showing cottons, bamboos, sugar cane, silks and all kinds of blends to entice us for spring and summer knitting. I am so not in the mood. How do I feel like knitting skinny little tops for summer when the temp can't even get into double digits??? Hopefully, tomorrow is supposed to go to near 40 degress. Maybe sunshine wil help. So back to knitting with a beautiful silk/merino blend. And all snuggly by the fire.

Oh for many of you who have stayed tuned in... Bob had the drain tube removed today. All 20 lymph nodes that were biopsied came back negative. Awesome news for which we are extremely thankful. In a couple of weeks, he will start phase two. Until then we will join our friends on Jan 7 to celebrate Serbian Christmas one more time. Thank you all.

Where did the time go? Seems like just yesterday that I took the reins of the Yarn Shop and here 2012 will bring the beginning of our 7th year. We have had some wonderful times; met some wonderful people and learned some wonderful things.

Personally, it's been a time of change for both Bob and I. Some days we deal with it well. Some days not so well. Are we any different than other folks. Don't think so. So what do you do when you've had "one of those days?"

On the last day of the year as I was leaving the shop - not quite as tidy as I would like but what else is new? I was excited to get home and have a nice dinner with Bob and relax and enjoy the hoopla of New Year's Eve, when.....the car felt funny as I backed out of the parking space. Oh no, I thought. Not Baby!! Oh I know that my 15 year old relic which has seen better days, will leave me standing on the curb one of these days but not today.... not the last day of 2011. Well not quite. Seems I had a flat tire. Thank goodness for AAA service. Yes, I can change a tire but I had to get the manual out to find out where the donut tire was located. Hahaha, seems that I've never had a flat in this car before. So I searched for the manual and looked it up.

When the tow guy got there, he couldn't believe that the tire had never been used and it still had air! So the gods were watching out for me. He changed the tire and I started for home - a little deflated but not too worse for wear.

This year has been successful for us in many ways. We have added to our family by ways of marriage; we have grown together through some tough times and we have learned to laugh more - at funny things and sometimes, at ourselves. We have learned to appreciate the amazing (yeah I know they want to remove this word but...)people who have entered our lives and shared with us.

And we have learned that it's okay to sit back and enjoy the quiet; the noise; the scurrying and the slow pace. So as we go forward into 2012, please take the time to be thankful for what you have and who you have in your life. I know I will try a litle harder. If nothing else 2011 had taught me that.

Now to go rip my latest project and start over- one more time!

Now what?

Are you one to make lots of resolutions for the New Year? Or just a couple with hopes that you keep one? Or do you say, "I know I won't keep them so why bother?" I'm somewhere in between and usually about April have to re- resolute.

One resolution I make every year is that I won't take on too much knitting-wise so I can get these projects finished in a timely manner without staying up til all hours on Christmas Eve to finish. Does it work? Nope, never, ever. There's always just one more or someone you didn't think would like a handknit. Then they see something you've done for someone else and they express an interest like - Oh, Wow! I like THAT! Can't miss that one?

So now I am trying to get the after- Christmas or Pre-New Year gifts done. In between, we've come up with a class schedule. Matt is busy loading the classes on-line and they should be done by week's end. Paper copies are in the shop.

Rae-Ann is in today. I will be in tomorrow and we both will be in on Friday. And so you don't miss it ----

Friday is Knitter's New Year's Eve. Come join us 5:30 to 8ish. Bring a chair because we will run out. fun, frolics and food. See you then.

Update on Honey - went to PSHershey today. He's doing well but drain tube remains. Probably will come out next week. He can now shower and drive. He was so anxoius and nervous to take that 1st shower - his first one since Nov 7th. Now he is resting! It was quite an event. He did well, no dizziness. So now we just wait....til next week.

Grandsons

Today is our grandson, Joshua's, 18th birthday. It hardly seems possible that he has grown up so fast. I remember the first time we saw him.

He was born in Hawaii (both parents are Air Force) and we didn't see him until 2 months later when Kevin came home for his sister's wedding. He had so much hair! We all thought Kevin (who is known for playing tricks/pranks) had put a wig on him. After a flight(s) from Honalulu to Harrisburg, you would have thought all he would do is cry. Not Josh, he just smiled and burped! Loud burps. I remember his Nana, Keni, laughing in surprise. Of course, he was checked out to make sure all the fingers and toes were there - you know the drill!

And so he grew up - literally and annually. He plays guitar and is a fine student. He's been accepted to the U of Oklahoma - his first choice. He is a polite young man, thoughtful and ready to laugh too. Not to mention he's a cutie too - and that's not just a proud grandma talkin'.

So here's to you, Josh, go forth and make yourself proud of what you do and how you do it. We love you always - even if you are taller than me. Yeah I know, who isn't?

Last minute everything

As I sat in the Dr's office waiting, I pondered the conversations going on around me. All I wanted was a few minutes of peace and quiet - and maybe a 15 minute catnap. But no, the chatter was on. Everyone making a verbal list of all the stops they had to make to get everything done. How about you? Are you a planner and start early so that you don't have last minute errands? Are you a procrasinator who waits til the last minute because you like the hustle and bustle? Not sure which category I fit into anymore.

While on our way home from the first appointment this AM, my Hubby joyfully announced that we had to go to the Mall on Friday morning. As I straightened the car out on the road and chastised him for saying those dirty words while I was driving, I politely in a loud voice asked "Are you nuts???"
He quickly apologized and then timidly asked "Why"? OMG, could he be serious? I asked if he really wanted to spend a great part of the morning looking for a parking place, walking 10 by 10 across, stopping every two feet for the folks in front of us, only to get to "the store" and find out they didn't have any. Why not call? Well, he hemmed and hawed. So I have no idea what we will end up doing but I won't be a happy camper if I have to go to the Mall on Dec 23rd.

Fumbling along to the finish line

Last Thursday I had to close early to get Bob to PSHershey for some urgent care. His drain tube was clogged again and we needed to beat feet. That's one thing I am good at - Bob thought I was trying to imitate Life Lion! So in an attempt to keep customers apprised, I posted a phone message so that customers would find out we were closed temporarily when they called. On Friday, I though I removed the message and all would get the "normal" one. To my chagrin and embarrassment, it was still playing today. As a result, I received quite a few phone calls expressing concern.

First of all - Thank you everyone and I am truly sorry for causing undue concern..
Second - Bob is fine and so is his slightly loopy wife. Can I blame it on lack of sleep? Hardly, I think it's just normal - whatever that is.

Now, I must recognize quite a few folks who have just been awesome in helping up front and behind the scenes. My great teachers; shop helpers Janice and Rae Ann; everyone else who has helped stocked shelves: my step-daughter Dayna and her John (uhh, that didn't sound right, did it?) His name is John H. and he has been so helpful. Mary H and her hubby, Tom, who has offered driving services for Bob's treatments. Folks who have made meals and sent cards to Bob full of good wishes of health. He so loves cards. There are more than I can remember and we so appreciate it.

Now let's get to the important stuff. In the midst of all this, we have a deadline. Yep, gift giving knitting and crocheting. How are you all doing? Meeting the deadline. Take on more than you can accomplish? Staying up late trying to get done?

Sometimes, we just have to say no more. Make sure you take time to have fun and enjoy all the hustle and bustle. And remember, eat cookies, drink eggnog and hot chocolate (or beverage of choice), look at the lights, get misty over Christmas cards and classic movies, look at the trees all decorated.
And be kind to one another as we go forward to another year.

Emergencies

Wow! Two days this week we made emergency-type trips to PS Hershey Plastic Surgery Clinic. The drain tube had clogged and Bob starts leaking thru his skin soemhow. It's scary and uncomfortable for him. Actually it can be painful but he doesn't always like to admit that. So we have gone flying down the turnpike (at least, Bob thinks we are flying). The toll taker kinda looked at me funny the first time. Maybe 80-85 isn't such a good idea. But I WAS scared and I tend to drive a little faster than he does - family jokes aside.

The staff at the clinic are so nice and caring. We have developed a real relationship with them. they not only provide the care needed, but add emotional support and much needed advice too. they also have been very quick to educate and to let us know that we are not doing something wrong. It's just how things are.

Yesterday, Rae Ann was at her other job and no one else was available so when he called, I had to close the shop and leave. Hopefully, we won't have any more of those occurrences and I apologize to anyone who was inconvenienced. Bob isn't allowed to drive yet so I had no choice but to close and drive him to the clinic.

I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your understanding.

It's 3 o'clock in the morning..

Not quite that late but and.. I can't sleep. It's difficult to type in the dark. You see we are still sleeping in the recliners in the family room and my back is killing me. So I am sitting here in the dark playing solitaire and writing this while I listen to Bob snore. Yep, snore.

And to top it all off - there is no snow. I know there are so many people around here who hate snow, freak out at the mere mention of snow and act like the end of the world is coming when they forecast snow. I like snow. The more the better. It's beautiful, quiet and peaceful. People slow down - literally and figuratively. They actually spend time together. Isn't that a novel idea??

What better way to pass the time than to work on a project? Got a last minute gift to make? Ler's get started. First, you make a cuppa (coffee, tea or hot chocolate recommended), organize your project yarn and tools. Then you begin. And take a relaxing deep breath and RELAX!

Amazing isn't it. You' d think it would help me sleep after all that relaxing but alas....My mind is so busy trying to line up the next project or 14 or so. Why oh why can't I sleep? Let's try one more game of solitaire and maybe I'll get sleepy.

Days off

I had such high hopes of getting some things accomplished today. The best laid plans of mice and men...... It started off well. We got ready - which is something that takes planning right now do to Bob's inability to do some things for himself. Like wash himself and get dressed. But it is getting better. I keep telling myself - over and over and over! It really is but it does seem slow and he gets a bit depressed too. So anyway, we got ready and went to both banks and then went to lunch at his favorite place. It's a locally owned diner near us. The food is good. So is the service.

After we had eaten and he was getting up from the table, he felt the tube and thought it was cold. He reached up and his shirt was wet! Huh?? So we went to the restroom to check it out. His shirt was wet; the ace bandage was soaked; and it was dripping down his side. I pulled my phone out as we went out the door and called the clinic. Got transferred to the on-call Resident. They took details and said they'd call back in 5. So we headed home. I took his shirt off and started checking things out - between grabbing paper towels and the towel on the counter. They called and we loaded the car for a quick - and fast- trip to Hershey. We had to get there before 4 because they close at 4. This was 3:05 and it's a 45 min trip by turnpike. So Ms A J Foyt put the petal to the metal and made it in 33 min but who's counting. I think Bob was, lol!!

We hauled a**** and I dropped him and his towel off at the door and searched for a parking spot and rannnnnnnnn all the way to bldg 4. Not a pretty sight. Got upstairs and they took him in. I think the nurse thought we were panicking until he got his shirt off and she saw the gauge pads I had taped to him to catch the drips. They were soaked. So was everything else. She said "Oh, I think the tube is clogged" and she proceeded to do some magic that unclogged it. All the while Bob was gripping my hand and it HURT. She was pulling on the tube a lot and he was breathing quickly. But it worked. And the swelling that had been building was gone in minutes.

When we got home and relaxed I had a large bowlful of ice cream. You see, Turkey Hill had a twofer this weekend. And ice cream is my downfall. I don't do it often but tonite I had earned it. So me and a big, honkin bowl of chocolate moose tracks sat in the big chair and cooled off. I knew I couldn't knit because I would just end up tearing it all out. So I ate ice cream.

So we will go back tomorrow for our regularly scheduled appt for a follow-up. Hopefully it will go well. At least I can drive calmly and normally. And maybe that tube will be out shortly. Life will be a little simpler but until he has full mobility back, it will go slower. And so must I.

Do the chores that need to be done. The rest can wait. He needs some company. So goodnite.

Thanks to all of you who made our 2nd Annual Pay it Forward Weekend a success! You have donated a lot of food items for the Central Pa Food Bank. I'm sure they will be able to put it to good use for our neighbors who need a helping hand. It's humbling to see how we all are willing to reach out and help.

And the first customer this morning informed me that we were her first stop to celebrate Small Business Saturday. Wow! That made me feel really good. Thanks to all who took the time, made a detour, and planned ahead to visit small businesses in our community. Without you, we wouldn't survive. So one more time - just in case Santa's watching- THANKS!

Time to restock some shelves and clean up a little to be ready for next week and some more new yarns!

Hours of Operation

We are attempting to maintain our normal hours of operation. However, we have hit a couple of bumps in the road this week. So here are the changes:

Tuesday, November 22 - Open at 11 AM

Wednesday, November 23 - Closing at 2PM.

These changes are necessitated because my husband needs some treatments due to his ongoing medical situation. We go forward one step and back two. It's frustrating and sometimes, demoralizing but we try to remember others have it worse than we do.

So we ask your patience and understanding as we go forward.

2nd Annual Pay It Forward Weekend

Last year we began a new tradition. We didn't want to feed the "Black Friday" frenzy in the usual way, so Bob & I decided that we would begin a weekend event that mirrored one of our favorite movies - Pay It Forward. We chose to "pay it forward" by collecting food for the Central Pa Food Bank.

What a better time than right after we had all celebrated Thanksgiving? So to continue that tradition we will expand it to Black Friday and Small Business Saturday - Nov 25 & 26. Bring 2 cans (veggies, fruit, etc) or 1 large box of dry goods (like mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cereal) and get 15% off regular priced items. This includes yarns, needles, books, bags and accessories. Just in time to create a beautiful handknit or crocheted gift for family and friends.

Last year we collected over 160 lbs of food for the Food Bank. You all were so generous. We have a goal of 200 lbs this year. Can we beat that goal?? We sure hope so.

Most of us have lots to be thankful for even though things could always be better. So lets start to make it better. Join us on Friday Nov 25 from 9 - 8 and Sat Nov 26 from 10-4 during Pay It Forward Weekend!

Progress?

Saturday I was so encouraged by my Honey's progress. Should have thought twice. Sunday we had a bump in the road. He started to swell and had a couple of other complications. We are the most fortunate folks. Our next door neighbor, Diane, is a visitng Nurse, aka "Angel". She has been so helpful. I have been able to do everything he needed except I could not stick a needle into his belly. Just could not do it. Honey has done it before but when you are right-handed and your right arm is semi functioning, it's a problem to stick a needle into your belly. Enter Diane. She has been a wonder, coming over every day at 9 and 9 to give him a shot. She also helped with the dressings giving me hints to make ripping tape off a little easier on him. She also has been bringing him treats every day! A different kind of cookie each day. He's lovin it. Hope he doesn't get used to it - 'cause that's not my specialty.

So I called in Sunday nite and got the on-call Resident in Plastic Surgery. He talked us through it and said to call Monday. Dutifully I called this AM and they got us in this afternoon; examined him and explained what was going on. So we feel a little better and know that this is part of the healing process. We will get back to where we were and hopefully move forward.

In the meantime, Rae-Ann and Janice have been wonderfully volunteering their time to keep the shop running. They've been doing such a great job I might stay home a little longer, hahahaha! Barring any more 'bumps' I plan to start coming in for a few (2-3) hours at a time until Honey can be on his own. Not to tell tales out of school but when you can't use your right arm much and have a drain tube hanging down on the right - we laughingly call it the grenade 'cause that's what it looks like - it's kinda hard to drop your drawers to go to the bathroom! So I've been wearing my "Nursie" uniform and doing the deed, lol!!!! It's getting better now and he can do it by himself. Reminds me of when my son was little and we went thru potty training, sorta.

Anyway, not much knitting time but I did manage to finish my "Nougat" cowl in Zauberwolle in the blues shade. Hope to get a picture and give the proper credit soon.

Differences

What a difference a week makes - wow! Sun is shining, temp is going to 60ish, leaves are glowing and falling. Air is crisp - a beautiful fall day. Driving to work I had to make myself concentrate on the road. All I wanted to do was look at the landscape. Beautiful trees still have their leaves and the glowed with the sun blazing through them. Hard to believe a week ago I had to concentrate on the road through great big snowflakes!!! Had to gear up to knit by candlelight. Can you imagine how they did it in the olden days? Those pioneer women sure have my admiration.

So as I was driving I began to look at the color palate around me. Bright yelows, greens, oranges and even the duller browns of the leaves that were dead. What a rich arrangement we are given each year. Got any ideas yet? Need placemats for those Holiday meals? Now's the time to get ready. A warm cardi on these chilly mornings would be great to wear in place of a jacket or coat and probably more comfortable. Try a top-down so you have very little finishing and can wear almost immediately. Made in a chunky yarn, it knits up quickly. Am I tempting you? Good. Knitting or crocheting in the evenings or weekend afternoons is great relaxation after a stressful week.
It also will keep the chill off your legs!

Round Two

Next week Honey will undergo another surgery for his cancer. He wasn't accepted into the Clinical Trial so we are back to the 'standard of care' method. He will have all the lymph nodes under the right arm removed and all that entails. After about 3 weeks of healing, he will then undergo a 4 week/daily regimen of Interferon by IV. The side effects are 6 weeks of flu-like symptoms.

I share this because our customers have given so much to us in these last three months and we want you to know how much we appreciate you. I will be out of the shop all next week and Rae-Ann and Janice will be keeping things up and running. Thank you for your patience, prayers and good thoughts.

The plan is that I will return the week of Nov 14th and we will get on with life. So while I'm gone, share with the ladies and shop for those Holiday gifts - it's fast approaching. As much as we like to think we can create the magic it actually takes a little longer to make those hats, mittens, scarves, etc. So don't delay!

Felting update

After listening to the morning weather report I am feeling more and more like hibernating and knitting to keep warm. Do you sometimes feel like that? I have a feeling that I am coming home tonite with a bag full of yarn, lol!

So feeling inspired this AM, I tried the felted slippers on. They were too big. Did I fall into the Goldilocks book? Oh well, back to the washer... this time they felted small enough. so I put them out on the sunporch to dry. Here's what they look like now.

I had just a little left out of the four balls of Naturgarn. This is felted. Thought I might cut out a shape and use for a Christmas decoration. Who says they can't be colorful?

Rainy, rain go away... it's trick or treat

My husband said to me this morning that it looked like Mother Nature was playing trick on us before we even got the treats! Yep, it's trick or treat in our neighborhood tonite and it will be windy, dark and spooky I'm sure. And that's before the treaters even hit the streets!

So while it's rainy and yucky out, how are you treating yourself? Got something to do. Puuuuullleeaase do not say housework. I know it's a necessary evil but not on a rainy day. That's depressing. Rainy days are for treating ourselves to a break from the routine. Time to curl up with a good cuppa -beverage of choice- tea, coffee, hot chocolate with lots of whipped creme and sprinkles, too! Who says Starbucks can't live at home? Then it's on to a great knitting or crochet project. Got a new one you've been waiting to start? Need to finish the UFO? Why not? That's what rainy days are for. And maybe a few pages of the book that's also vying for a few minutes of your time.

Since I actually felted Big Foot last night, I am goal-oriented to finishing the new scarf. I changed the needles to #9. It's a cute scarf and has a little sparkle too it. Should have a pic later this week.

Here's Big Foot before felting. I used Naturgarn and #15 needle. It was quick and easy. Can't wait til they are dry, which might be next week if it ever stops raining!

Big Feet or not felted?

Got an idea to make some felted slippers. So I checked out some patterns, pulled the yarn and went home on Saturday nite. Honey is a HUGE Notre Dame football fan and the game was on Saturday nite. So we spent some "quality" time together, both doing what we like best. Sitting together, he watching football, me knitting.

I chose Viking of Norway's Naturgarn in a pink multi and their pattern from Viking Garn 0815. The slippers are knit on #15 needles. Breeze!!! By the time the game was over, I had both of them knit and sewn together. (Didn't read ahead and translation suffers a little) Could have knit the toe part in the round but didn't get my DPNs out. No biggie.

Looks like I will be doing some felting. They look like they could fit Big Foot. Haven't felted Naturgarn before so I think I'll stay close to the washer. Was supposed to felt them last nite but was late getting home (new shipment came in) and got behind. Didn't want to mess them up and NCIS and man-candy was coming on so... No, I don't govern my life by TV but when they finally give us a chance for man-candy that actually has some intelligence attached, I feel it' my patriotic duty to support. And.. I can knit while watching too so it's a win-win, right?

I will felt after work today and take another picture so we can compare the sizes. Should be fun. I used 4 skeins and had a little bit left.

Now what else can I start?

We are so lucky in this business. We get to work with our passion - fibers. Of all kinds, colors and textures. And we get visitors. We love visitors. They bring ideas from other parts of the country and get enthused about ours. When you are out and about in different parts of the state or country or even other countries, do you share? Do you send emails with pictures back to the shops you visited to let them see what you did with your purchase? In this electronic age, some like to do this and some don't. To those who do - thanks! It is encouraging to see the finished project. Also, to know whether you enjoyed working with the yarn.

I have a habit of either working these new projects quickly because it might be different than what is available locally. Or I want my local shop to carry it and what better way to entice the local shop owner to carry a yarn than a finished project. Remember, they like to touch and feel the yarns too! Sometimes, I 'treasure" the yarn and wait til a calm time when I can fall in love with the yarn again and work slowly and enjoy each and every stitch.

So in salute to a couple of visitors who shared with us, here are a couple of pics of their projects.

Fall is here in all it's glory. Sometimes we have to peak at it in between the rainy days, something we've been getting way too much of lately. The leaves will have blown or fallen down before we get to enjoy the colors. So we took matters into our own hands (no pun) and created color. Here are a few pictures from the Linen Stitch Scarf class we recently had. Colors are amazing, aren't they? Sometimes we think these 2 colors will go together and then we knit or crochet them and the result is less than pleasing. Change the shade of one just a smidge, and VOILA! We become artists. Throw in a another color just for giggles and grins and get a whole different look.

Honey update

Bob and I are so thankful to all of you who have asked about, volunteered to help, offered words of encouragement and prayers. The irony of the whole thing is he doesn't feel sick or ill at all. He played golf yesterday!

He signed up for the Clinical Trial only to be told that he doesn't qualify. His "tumor" was too small. We think this is a good thing; however, it does mean that he will now have to have all of the lymph nodes under the right arm removed. We are waiting for a date now. After a period of healing he will endure 4 weeks of IV Interferon and 6 weeks of flu-like sysmptoms. So life goes on and we try not to dwell on it.

I am so glad that I have my knitting. It may sound like a cliche and I've read other blogs where the writer has said the same thing. But I know it to be true. When I am stressed I eat if my hands aren't busy. So not only does my knitting help with peace of mind but it is helping to control my weight. Don't know what I would do without it. What do you do when stressed? Some folks run, walk, bike, bowl, watch TV, read or nothing at all. I have to busy and I don't mean cleaning type busy. Yecccch!!! Altho, sometimes I like doing that to keep busy but my salvation right now is knitting.

So am I in the right place at the right time?

We also have three new classes added to the schedule. "Eventide" by Laura Nelkin is being taught in two separate sessions. The first is the swatch class where you'll learn to knit with beads and learn the cross stitch pattern on a smaller swatch-sized piece. We have kits available for the class. if you missed out on the class at Knitters' Day Out, here's your chance.

Then Mary will teach the scarf in a 2-session class beginning the following week. Mary has loaned her sample and it is on display.

Also, Rae-Ann is teaching a 2-class sesssion on Holiday ornaments. What a wonderful small gift for teachers, mailman, etc. Just in time for the rush. She will have some ideas and examples to share!

Fall days and new projects

Yes, it really is fall and time now moves to shorter days, color in the leaves, smell of apples or apple pie, cinnamon and a settling of the earth in preparation for winter. Hope you were able to pick up an apple pie from the good folks in New Cumberland since Apple Fest got rained out. Yum! Maybe there will be some left when I get off work. How do you eat your apple pie - plain, ice cream, cool whip or cheese? Yes, cheese a slice of good ole cheddar - it's a new england thing, okay?

So, yarns have been arriving all week and we have been unpacking and stocking as fast as we can. Have you see the new colors of Claudia Fingering, or Mini Mochi, or Unisono? We also got in Sausalito from Crystal Palace. Just in time for the Linen Stitch Scarf. I've got one almost done and have picked 2 different colorways to make more. I swear it's addictive.

Then there's Moonshine, also from Crystal Palace. It's a mohairy-type with a little sparkle in it. Great for a dressy scarf or shawl. Beautiful colors.

Classes are filling up so don't wait or miss out. We are always adding new classes so stay tuned!

Now I'm off to pick another project (and maybe stop for apple pie!) Have a wonderful weekend - it would be nice to stay dry for while.

Cuddle Blankets

As we all know, the areas around Hershey/Middletown, Harrisburg and the areas on the West Shore have been hit hard by the flooding. So many have lost so much, houses, belongings and memories. Some of us are donating cleaning supplies, clothes, furniture and time to help. There are some who may not be able to do those things.

But there are many of us who could bring a little love to many. Let's start a project to show them a little love. We call them "Cuddle Blankets". They must be machine washable and no larger than 48" x 48". Sharing a blanket with a little one who has nothing right now may bring a smile and some comfort. So let's tune up those knitting needles and crochet hooks. I know we can make a difference. Drop them off at the shop and Honey and I will deliver to local agencies.

Aftermath

Now that Knitters' Day Out has come and gone - and what an eventful weekend it was - with much fanfare, joy, knitting, beading and other pursuits, it's time to get serious. Yes, serious. Serious about finishing our projects, getting projects made for the holidays and that all-important gift-giving time. We talk about this every year. And I don't know about you but I will attempt half-heartedly for a short time. And then someone will stop in the shop with a cute little project that everyone is doing and of course, I have to stop my current project and start this new one. And then we are off and running, starting a new project expecting to wake up in the morning and found that I can now knit while I sleep or the "knitting fairies" finished it while I slept. If pigs could fly!!!

So let's get serious. I currently have 3 projects on needles (oh, don't look behind the couch, puleeeeese) and I am going to finish them. Yep, this week even. I might not sleep but I am going to finish them. BECAUSE.......I saw several projects I want to start. Oho, you thought I was just trying to be good? Nawwww.

You see, Honey goes to OC to play golf next week. When he goes I don't sleep. So I got the bright idea a few years ago that I would knit a bunch of projects while he was gone. It might have worked if I had chosen small things like hats, fingerless gloves, etc but no, I chose a coat- yep, a coat. Think I might finish that overnite? Not a chance. So my goal this year is to choose small things and maybe I just might finish one or two. And I'm not counting the ones on needles either.

We have gotten in some Heather Linen Stitch Scarf kits from Schaefer Yarns and I'm dying to make one. Maybe I'll start with that. Don't know how to steek? Sign up for Rae-Ann's class.

Weekends and other fun things to do

Got up this morning... and said to myself, "Yeah, no work!" Now let's be honest. I love my job, I really do but I do need some time off just like everyone else. So selfishly, I decided to close on Saturday. After the last few weeks, I thought Bob and I needed some quality time together. (Why does that phrase "Got..." stick in my head. It's always sung lik the Sopranos show lead-in and I really didn't even like the show?)

So he went to the bank for me and then we started packing yarns for Knitters' Day Out. Yep, that's quality time in our house! After we finished, we went shopping for wedding clothes.

Our grandson, Kyle and his fiancee, ShyAnne are getting married at 5PM on Saturday, Sept 10th (one half-hour before KDO ends). It's hard to accept that he is grown up enough to even think about these things. You see, we have 7 grans - 5 boys and 2 girls- and only 2 live within a reasonable visiting distance for every day kind of events. So Kyle and his sister, Hallie, have had to endure all of the grans attending every event, big or small, that they ever even thought of participating in. As a result, we tend to forget, as grandparents are wont to do, that they really do grow up.

Of course, this caused a bit of a dilemma because how was I going to leave KDO? The booth needed to be torn down and packed up. Not the most fun job in the world. Hopefully, we vendors go home with a lot less yarn but... it's work, hot, heavy and under a time limit. So one nite, at Knit and Chat, the wonderful ladies offered to take over. So Rae-Ann and Rhoda will coordinate the tear-down and drive the rickety 15yr old van home fully loaded - well hopefully, not quite fully loaded. Empty would be heaven.! Realistically, not quite as loaded as when we arrived. Am I grateful? Words can't describe the feeling of gratitude I have for them and their desire to see me at my grandson's wedding. Particularly, after the last few weeks.

So, I am not teaching as much this fall until we see the progress this disease will take. I need to spend time with the bestest man in my life. I will continue to work in the shop as usual. But evenings need to be spent with Bob right now. I know that you all understand and appreciate this and I am grateful for that.

So quality time continues and now.... we are in a rain delay while waiting for the Notre Dame game to resume. Maybe I should have gone to work??? We are having a good time together. That being said, I guess I should go knit. Does that sound weird?? I have all this time and I don't want to knit or is it that I want to start something new and I am trying to be good and finish one of several (we won't count) UFOs.

I am knitting a scarf in horseshoe lace in a new yarn we will have at KDO. It has a beautiful feel. It's a handpaint and merino/silk/nylon superwash fingering weight yarn. I really like it and will probably make socks too! There will be a picture soon just to tempt you all a little.

If you are going to KDO, I hope you enjoy every minute. I know I do. And make sure you wear something you made if you can. We love to see the finished projects. Who knows, there may be a few roving photogs this year! You could be famous..

We will be closed on Saturday, September 3rd to celebrate Labor Day weekend with our family. As we prepare for our grandson Kyle's wedding to our granddaughter-in-law to be, ShyAnne, we hope that each and every one of you has a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Oh, and just so you don't think I'm getting lazy or anything, there will be some time spent starting the packing of new yarns for Knitters' Day Out... and lots of time knitting a couple of samples while we chat, eat and just plain old relax with our family.

Life's Journey

So we begin a journey that many others have paved the way before us. My husband affectionately known as Honey to most of you, our customers and friends, has been diagnosed with Melanoma and will have a brain scan on 8/23 and a PET scan on 8/25 at o'dark30. For those of you who aren't militarilty oriented, that translates to 6:15AM and the hospital is 30 minutes away by car! I am NOT a morning person, but I will do whatever it takes for him. We then see the Dr @ 945 so we will be spending most of the day at Penn State Hershey Med Ctr.

The shop will be (wo)manned by the ever capable Rae-Ann, so no worries. There may be times, however, when there won't be someone available and I apologize for that. We will do our best to make this journey without affecting customer support. And I know you all will understand. Because my husband must come first in this life journey which we have enjoyed together as husband and wife for 10 years.

Thank you for your understanding, prayers, and support. Keep the needles clicking and hooks clacking as we move along. I know I will. I don't know how I could tolerate the hours of waiting without it. What do other people do? If I didn't have my knitting I would eat, and eat and eat.... and that would not help. So I will keep knitting and posting when I can.

Pebble Neck Warmer

Saw a post on Facebook the other day from another yarn shop in Philly and liked the pattern which is free on Ravelry. So I took a hank of Basso from Schulana home with me. Sunday afternoon I had a couple of hours and thought it would be a good time to start. So I got my #35 needles - yep, the turkey basters, and cast on 7 stitches. Each row is the same: K1, P1 across. it takes one skein of Basso to knit and about 2 hours.

What do you do while waiting. I found myself recently in a hospital waiting room - full of people and so much noise I couldn't hear myself think. I couldn't read - well I could but didn't remember anything two minutes later. So I turned to my knitting. Thank goodness for knitting (or crochet). It's portable and sometimes mindless or intricate if that's what you need to keep you occupied.

I chose mindless I thought. Actually I should say basic. A new pattern from Fiber Dreams came in and I had started that. It wasnt difficult and it kept my mind somewhat focused while I waited for Bob's surgery to be finished. I looked around this large room and to my surprise - no one else was knitting or crocheting! It took me a minute to realize that I was the only one. Usually I see at least one kindred spirit. Now that doesn't mean there wasn't one in the room - just not one who was actively engaged. So I kept going round and round on the cowl.

And when we got home and I looked at it - I ripped it out. I had knit it correctly but my gauge was awful!!!! Apparently when I am stressed I go back to my "Loose Woman" mentality. So I started over on a better day and hopefully I will have it finished shortly.

Oh, and Bob did well with the surgery. Now we wait for biopsy results. And that's a pain in the you-know-where!

Shadow Boxes Cardi progress

Class met again and it's amazing to see these sweaters come alive - so to speak!

As always, color choices are unique to the individual and look so different when knit together. The really wonderful part is when someone looks at the back piece laying flat and can't see the shadows. Then move just an inch or two to the right or left and -- shazaammmm! It's amazing......

See what I mean? I have so many examples to show you and you'll probably all get bored with them but I am happily amused in this heat. And anything that can keep me happy in this heat...is a good thing.

Yarn bombings and other events

Been reading about yarn bombings and started thinking. Yes, that's always a dangerous occupation for me. Never know where it will lead.

Yarn bombings are events that happen world-wide to decorate the public areas of our worlds. York, PA has decorated parking meters, larger cities have statues wearing colored socks. London, England even had a 'bombed double-decker bus that is really colorful. It's not destructive and is actually entertaining. Sometimes folks decorate a tree branch, a doorknob, or other small objects.

So I started thinking.....hmmmm....hmmmm some more. And I came up with an idea. I'm not revealing the final goal but here are some pics of the start. We have a couple of baskets of yarn on the table and would appreciate the donation of time to knit a couple of rows. We have 13" knit so far and need 72" (does that sound better than 6ft?). So stop in and help our group effort. Maybe even be part of the reveal!

Won't you help us out? We have lots of yarns to choose from and you can knit whatever stitch you would like - gartr, stockinette, seed, do some k2tog and yo's, half linen. The choice is yours.

It's a bit warm this year... approaching 90 degrees and maybe hotter. Not a fan of the heat but that won't keep me from the putt-putt golf champoinship tonite with our 7 yr old grandson! It's on baby. He's a demon on the course and we will have to be on topp of our game - or else! Love having him here for a visit.

So enjoy, celebrate and savor the freedoms we have. There's no other country like ours!

Yesterday 14 of us started on a journey together. Our fearless leader, Janice, is walking us thru the steps to knit the Sahdow Boxes Cardigan found on Ravelry. Maureen Mason-Jamieson of Kinver Beach Knit Designs created this beautiful pattern and we are having fun.

First you have to choose 4 yarns of comparable weight. No problem you say? Well, then you have to think contrast, position, etc. And if you are like me, sometimes making up your mind isn't as easy and one might think. I have changed at least one yarn every week for about 8 weeks. No lie! I'm usually so decisive but this time????? Not a chance. Last week I thought I finally had made the FINAL choice. So Sunday I sat down and began. Yep, I didn't listen. I started before class. (I'm allowed aren't I?). And I got to the second color and knit four rows - and YECCCCHHHHH! I ripped it off the needles and ripped it back to the first color.

Then I sweetly said to Honey, let's take a ride to the shop. After an eye roll that would do a teenager proud, he drove me to the shop - yes, I can do it myself but my mind was otherwise engaged. Not wanting to create an accident, I made the choice. See I can make a choice when I realllly need to. I pulled about 15 balls of yarn off the shelf and mixed them up on the table. Then I started the selection process. I eliminated the pinks all together - wasn't a pink day. And eventually made a choice.

So now we are all knitting and hopefully everyone else is happy with their color selection. I am so far.

Yes, time comes and goes. This week turned out to be somewhat eventful but also uneventful. How, you ask?

Monday was D-day. Went to PSHershey for the EGD/EUS. Was pleasantly surprised by the wonderful care I received. Test went well. Woke up very easily which was a new experience for me. Test result were not a surprise. They found nothing to cause the pain - surprise! Actually, it wasn't. The Dr didn't expect to find anything. So now we travel another path to see if his expectation pans out. He suspects it's arthritis of the spine pinching a nerve that runs around to the front and is in spasm. So now we start with new DRs. Hopefully, they will be able to determine if it is or not. In the meantime, I actually feel good!

Class update

We have added a Basic Toe-Up Sock class beginning June 23rd and continuing July 7 and July 21st. If the holiday week is a deterrent, we can schedule a make-up on July 14th. This class will teach a toe-up sock on a 40" circular needle using the "magic loop" method. You will also learn Judy's magic cast on and a heel flap type of heel.

Okay... tis hot today -again. So while the sweat was running down my back as I cleaned up the back room, I started dreaming of new yarns to fill the shelves. Somehow I always paln to clean the backrooms on the hottest days. Honey says the dreaming starts because I am dehydrating - naw!

Mother Nature

Wow it's been an interesting few days and it's not over yet! I was at the shop on Tursday nite when the lights went out - at home. Hubby text me and said a tree came down and knocked out the power. He said "Don't come home 'cause you can't get down the street - too many firetrucks"! Got my attention - what??? Seems a live wire landed in a neighbor's yard and was arcing and started a fire. Okayyyy, fire's out so I ventured home. Lots of leaves and branches in the streets on the way home. Pull up in front of our house and everything looks normal. Hubby meets me at the door and says "Come see!" like it's a new toy. So we go to the back of the house onto our wonderful sunporch. One of the things we fell in love with when we bought this house was this 21 x 12 enclosed sunporch with 9 nine huge windows. It's so relaxing to sit out there and watch the birds and look at the flowers and let the cares disappear. Unfortunately, right now when you look out the windows you see a huge tree that is almost touching the windows. The insurance hasn't been yet but it appears that the tree did, in fact, touch the house -hard, real hard. The dining room window now leaks (dining room touches sunporch at the point of impact) and the ceiling and wall of sunporch on that side have at least 1/2" separation from the house wall and, of course, rain leaks, er, pours in there. So we took some pictures. The power outage stretches at least 3 blocks and 2-3 apartment units behind us.

No one was injured for which we are thankful. No one lost the use of their house except for a couple of days until we get power back. It's unfortunate but not catastrophic like our neighbor friends in Joplin, MO.

Our newest neighbors, who live across the street and have power, offered the use of their freezer so we won't lose all of that. We really appreciate that.

The hardest part? Well, there are several actually. Hubby is at a loss - doesn't know what to do with himself. Seems all of his toys (except golf) and electrically powered. It is difficult or impossible to knit by candle power. I didn't expect that since I knit in the movies. I guess it's the shadows with these cataracts. Can't read except with penlite. I now understand the thrill of an ipad or nook or whatever but I'm not rushing out to buy one. Can't find the bathroom in the dark!!! It's still in the same place it's been for 12 years. Go figure - when the power's out it's really dark.

Just another journey - and this one will lead to a hotel room tonite if the power isn't back! This city girl has had enough! I don't like cold showers at allllllllllllllll!

Shadow Boxes Cardi

There's still room and we are offering an aftrnoon and an evening class. i can't wait to start mine. Miracles of miracles I haven't changed my colors in two weeks. I think that's really the hardest part - choosing color combinations!

Flowers and spring

I don't get too excited about flowers. Don't get me wrong, I like them even tho they make me sneeze a lot; make my eyes swell and cause drainage that clogs up my ears. That being said, I plant my fair share of annuals and perennials - mostly perennials. So this year I reaped the benefit of a transplant. We were doing some work in the back yard and I didn't want to sacrifice my Siberian Iris that I planted a year or two after we moved in, so I divided the large plant and hoped for the best. I'm not really good at following directions in the gardening area - mostly hit or miss- and let the good Lord do His magic. After dividing, I stuck them in the ground in several spots. They bloomed the next year but not really well. But this year - they are absolutely gorgeous. People are stopping and walking up the driveway to see them up close. Their color is so intense and I know my photos don't do them justice but here's my feeble attempt.

So now, I'm going to go back to the couch, knit and look out the window at my beautiful flowers - while they last.

Modular construction

Some of you are probably saying "what's that?" and "what's it got to do with knitting?" Some of you are wondering if it's some kind of 'log cabin' thing. When you look at these pictures, you'll understand that modular construction can be a beautiful thing -or more importantly can create a beautiful thing.

Rae-Ann, using Cascade's Ultra Pima in her fav color, has knit the model we have in the shop and will be teaching this class in June. This Tee is really gorgeous. The stitch pattern really pops out nicely in Ultra Pima. the interesting thing is how you make it fit the individual by changing needles to make smaller or larger hexagons.

Class projects and progress

Anyone see Abigail? Some of you may remember that I began this sweater when i began the medical journey that remains unfinished. But the sweater is ...finally! After a couple of false starts, errrrh, ahem, rips, rips, and more rips I finally finished this project and it fits. Never mix pain meds and knitting when gauge is important. I can handle some lightweight stuff but pills that knock me out for 3 hours, makes my knitting wonky!

So here it is - tada!

And now, to introduce our newest teacher, Karen Mitchell. She is modeling the Summer Cardi in Sublime SoyaCotton, pattern courtesy of Knitting Pure & Simple. Karen is teaching this class in June. It's top-down construction and no sewing. Lightweight enough for summer and warm enough for fall and winter.

A large box from Feza arrived today just in time to cheer my spirits. Am really getting tired of rain!

Circles and circles

A customer came in this week wearing a cowl or necklet that she had knit from a pattern she found on Ravelry (one of our personal favs). It's called sev[en] circles. So I looked it up.

The wheels started turning last night before knit & chat and I decided to use some leftover Mirasol Tupa to see what would happen. I had used the Mirasol Tupa for my Seaweed Cardi and loved it. So the journey began and ended this morning when I ran out of yarn. I only accomplished 3 circles but it was fun and has lots of possibilities. I'm thinking glitzy yarn for the holidays mebbee...

Help Japan

Today is the last day to help us Help Japan thru Knitting Fever's efforts. Knitting Fever is matching funds up to $50,000 that is donated by knitters, crocheters and LYS. We will mail our check tonite by priority mail so it arrives in NY on Friday. Please help us to help others.

May is here and Mother's Day

May is here and we thought the weather would improve. Sunny days and cool evenings ripe for sitting on patios and porches, maybe working on a light project. Well, hopefully it's coming but it hasn't been so nice yet. Storms, rain, flooding and more rain. It seems like it will never end. Maybe we should knit an ark!

In the midst of this is Mother's Day. Was never sure why we get just one day a year but it's the thought that counts, right? This year it happens to coincide with my one and only son's birthday! Yes, Jeff is 41 this year - oops! he probably doesn't like that but it's something you can't escape. It sure does ramp up the memories tho'.

Progress?

Spent an hour at the specialist yesterday only to be told that they don't know what is wrong. They have an idea, suspicion or educated guess but.... So they are going to schedule another test @ PS Hershey (cause that's the only place locally to do it) and it might take a month or more to get scheduled. I don't have to follow the bland diet anymore but was told I shouldn't rush righ out and eat McDonald's FF because I'm obese. I was not appreciative of the manner - not the fact. I know I weigh too much but so much for 'bedside manner". After all I've lost 14 lbs so far in the last 6 weeks. Yeah I could lose another 20 and not miss it at all. Easier said than done! I just want the pain to go away. It interferes with life!!!!!!

The creative juices are stunted; the desire to participate in anything is gone. I just want to curl up and hide. I'd like to be able to eat and not have pain afterward. Is that too much to ask?

Please bring us some sunshine - maybe that will help cure this cranky mood. We can all dry out and smile. That might just be the cure!

Hopefully, tomorrow I'll feel more like myself and we can get on with life. Thanks for listening.

PURE Hope Coffeehouse April 16th

One of our former Sunday School students is sponsoring a coffeehouse nite @ St Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Highspire PA on Saturday April 16th from 6:30 - 9:30 PM. All monies raised go to the Home Foundation and the Blood:Water Mission. There will also be a silent auction. Rumor has it there will be some collectible Senators baseballs in the auction too. We are so proud of Stephanie and her hard work to make this a success for the good of others. It's nice to know that our college-age students still come home to share. Way to go, Steph. Speaking of the Senators, Harrisburg own minor-league baseball team...Is anyone interested in Stitch 'n Pitch this year. Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful day and now they are calling for possible light snow tomorrow. So go the vagaries of March. I am having good days and some not so good. Pain comes and goes. Try to eat bland but sometimes that upsets me. However, a fish sandwich from Wendy's (w/o sauce) does not bother me. Go figure!???

Sure is good to be back and it's a great feeling when a beautiful yarn like this arrives. I didn't even take time to take a pic - just used SWTC's pic. 'Cause I've jsut gotta knit something right away. It would be great for a pair of socks and also absolutely beautiful for a shawl. Just a little glitter to sparkle in the evening light.

ER visits and all that stuff

Last week was a somewhat frightening week. It started off well and then, we took a turn ...downward. Wednesday nite I experienced pain like a gall bladder attack. Not so unique you say. Well, it is when you had it out several years ago. So I thought I had eaten something that didn't agree with me or it was Honey's cooking!

On Thursday morn it was still there. So off we went to the doctor's. Went thru the drill and he said "Well it can't be your gall bladder 'cause you don't have one". So process of elimination he thought it might be pancreatitis and drew blood for analysis. Going home with pain meds, a diet and scared *&&^^%$$##%, I thought OMG this is bad. You see, my ex-hubby died of this this past fall and I was scared. Didn't let on to Honey. I was too scared. Saturday dawned bright and beautiful as the Dr said "All your levels are just fine. It's not pancreatitis. How's the pain?" I answered, "Actually okay." Instructions that if it got worse, call or go to ER.

So that afternoon I thought I would shower - the first time in 3 days! I bent over to reach the shower controls and WHAM! I felt like I was gonna kiss the floor. I showered - wasn't going to the hospital without it. Remember your Mama's warning about always wearing clean undies??
So Honey (thank the good Lord for him) took me to the ER. They were quick and efficient - read as, got me on pain meds real quick! Actually, they were great and so busy. After a few tests and an ultra sound they said "You have gall stones". I had no idea that this could happen.

So now I am waiting for the Gastro Dr. to call with an appointment. Hopefully, tomorrow. If not, his intake nurse-type is a customer, lol. Never hurts to call your friends. Truthfully, I just want to get this over with. It hurts and I don't do well with pain.

And it gets in the way of my knitting- seriously. It hurts to raise my right arm so I cannot knit. All this down time and I cannot knit. I am so bored. Reading, TV etc aren't near as much fun when you can't knit.

My thanks to Honey (he's a knight in shining armor to put up with me), Rae-Ann, Marcia and Janice who have pitched in, taken over and relieved my mind that the shop still functions and the beat goes on. I will be floating in and out until this is taken care of. God willing, I will come roaring back with lots of grat ideas. So keep tuned in.

Some folks ask why we close and some ask why we are open. What to do? I usually elect to err on the side of caution - slippery parking lot, lousy driving conditions, snow forecast, etc. My motto is "live to knit (or crochet) another day". So we closed early.

While I'm closed, my mind is thinking up all kinds of new ideas so I'm not slacking off. I'm contemplating a featherweight cardi for spring and chilly summer evenings. Also, some lace weight shawls or wraps; new sock patterns and a few other ideas. Stay tuned.

On this, our fifth anniversary, I am mostly thankful to all of our loyal and thoughtful customers and friends who have kept us here and in business during these last months of shaky economy. It feels like yesterday in many ways. So hopefully, we will open the doors tomorrow and begin year #6 and discover new adventures we can journey thru together.

So be safe and finish some of those UFOs and stop back in for a visit.

Shop closing and class cancellation

Winter weather

And once again, we play a guessing game weather-wise in central Pa. Honey and I live approx 3/5 mi north of the PA Turnpike which is frequently used by weather forecasters in the area as the line for +/- inches of snow breaks.
Somehow, that turnpike moves ever so sneakily during the nightto the north side of our house. Currently, we live on the 2-4 in side of it. But we have at least 4 in in our yard already. How does that workexactly?? Only in the world of forecasting.

We've shoveled some parking spots open and I am open. Cartons of yarns to be unpacked so i have something to keep me busy. Schools are closed. Stores are open and the bread and milk lines are growing. After you stop for groceries, stop in and get a project to keep you entertained too.

Snow Days

It's interesting to listen to folks and their opinions about snow. My younger years were spent growing up in the great state of New Hampshire. Yes, we got snow. Funny tho', the year we moved here we had more snow in PA than they did up there! Amazing how that works sometimes. I won't go into the tales about how much and school cancellations etc. Ancient history. I do miss the ice skating tho'.

There's an annual event around here that gets everyone excited - for several reasons. Some folks love the Farm Show, some don't. Some complete in the events at the Farm Show, show think it's a waste. Today is the Sheep-to-Shawl contest. I personally find it an amazing competition. The woven shawls produced are beautiful creations and done within a time limit. Don't know about you but turn on a clock timer and I'm fumble fingers! Good luck to all the participants and make beauty ladies and gents!

Some new books arrived yesterday and my mind and fingers are itchin' to start something new. I've almost finished Honey's "In and Out" sweater in Knitter's K100. I'm on the sleeves of "Homecoming" in the same issue. I finished the second sock yesterday. So, I'm down to two projects and have lots of bare needles. Doesn't that mean I have an obligation to the fiber world to start another one?? Hmmm, what shall it be?

We still have a couple of places in the class schedule for Cassis and Eco Tunic. Don't wait too long to sign up.

Tonite is Stitch Therapy and several folks have asked what that is so here goes. For years, we hosted a prayer shawl get-together. Knitters and crocheters would ask if they could work on other charity projects. So we changed it to Stitch Therapy. We include Chemo Caps, Preemie Caps and Blankets, and Helmetliners. So come on in and join us. Second Wednesday of the month from7 to 8:30.

PA Farm Show

Many of you are familiar with the annual Farm Show held every year in Harrisburg, Pa. It's quite a display of animals, cooking, fashion and food. There is a fashion show every year of hand sewn and hand knit or crocheted articles and garments. There is a sheep-to-shawl contest every year too. And the shawl is auctioned off for charity. Wonderful family entertainment and education.

And as we all know in this area, it's often the 'cause' of winter weather - sometimes measured by the feet instead of inches. Current forecast is for snow showers for Saturday - the start of the week-long event. Local folklore rumors that this event and snow are synonomous. Time will tell. All I know is, I won't be caught short without at least 2 projects ready to go 'cause i don't want to be stranded without something to do if tradition is correct!

Getting a box of helmetliners ready to go out tomorrow for the troops. And we will start collecting again tomorrow for the next shipment. Thanks to all who have helped. Wouldn't this be a wonderfully selfless way to start the New Year?? Have any knitting-related resolutions?

We have received another shipment of Bolero from Trendsetter. This thick-n-thin yarn is just great for a quick earflap hat on #15 needles.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Just a quick note to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We hope 2011 is a better year for everyone.

Give yourselves a pat on the back. We just received a letter of thanks from the Central PA Food Bank. The "Pay It Forward" drive on Thanksgiving weekend collected 160 pounds of food. This bounty will be shared with folks in the greater Central PA area who are in need of a helping hand. And thanks to all of you that will happen. Who knows maybe next year we'll collect even more. Or there will be less need - that would be perfect.

We will be open on Christmas Eve, Dec 24th, til 3 PM. Then it's off to celebrate with family and friends. We hope you all do the same. We will be back on Dec 28th at 10 AM to share and Knit or Crochet. Stop in and end the year on a good note.

Jan class schedule

Forecast

I know that some out there cringe at the word 'snow'. I love snow. There I said it and no, I am not crazy. Born in NH and proud of it. We handled snow and went about our lives - safely. Today, schools close at the first flake. I wish! I have pictures where the snow was higher than our car and Mom drove 20 miles to work every day - and left early so she didn't drive like an idiot. And arrived on time. Wow! wouldn't that be different today??

So now that they are predicting flurries today, possible sleet tomorrow nite, and snow on Monday here is the big question. Are you ready? Do you have enough yarn, the right needles or hooks, projects. Or do you need to rush out and get some supplies to hold you over - just in case??? Yeah I know we all have all the holiday stuff to do but.... being devoted to our craft, it seems like I just have to have a new project when snow threatens. Maybe it's to keep my hands occupied or my mind. Maybe it's because I want to go out in the snow and play like I did as a kid. And that is now not so easy to do physically. Maybe it's because I'm stuck in the house.....Maybe it's just because I am a KNITTER!!

So enjoy the forecast. Embrace it. Bake some cookies, make tea, coffee or hot chocolate (my personal fave - what you expected something different? hah); eat a couple of cookies snuggled up on the couch surrounded by patterns, yarn, knitting books, a good knitting mystery or two. And let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

In the meantime we are here til 9PM tonite. Ready and willing to help you finish those last minute holiday gifts. Come on in and join us!

Catch Up

Do you feel rushed? Not enough hours in the day to get done what you need to get done? It seems like no matter how much I plan to try to avoid it, the mad rush happens every year. Maybe adding several new projects to the basket doesn't help. Altho, I always tell myself that by doing so, I'm really trying to relax and knit. LOL!!!!!

So here is some of the catch up for the fall projects in our classes. Mea culpa for being so slow about it.

So while you rush around, I'll start on the new schedule of classes that will begin in January. If all goes well, schedule will be ready by Dec 10th or shortly thereafter.

And now back to my gift knitting. Crunch time is here!

Friends

It's the time of year when we think about friends and family a little more than the busy days of life let us throughout the year. So hold them close but let them go free to find their way, love them and tell them so as often as you can, and then when it's time to let go..... cry, yell and say a prayer, hold good thoughts or whatever brings you comfort.

I was privileged to know and be a friend with Ann Marie Brown. Ann Marie is now released from her pain and has joined the legions of 'angel' knitters. Ann Marie was the founder of the local Afghans of Appreciation for the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines - past and present. Over the four years that the Afghan drive was running, she collected over 2000 afghans or lap robes to send to troops. It always seemed that when she lost one point of contact to ship to, another always turned up. Sometimes quite unexpectedly. And from all walks of life. She used to say it was her Irish luck. Whatever it was, it worked. So now we take a pause to remember our knitting breaks at Borders, Stitch Therapy evenings and lots of other things. Our sympathy goes out to her family and to those of use who were our other family

Giving thanks

We have recovered (mostly) from this past weekend's event and wish to thank each and every one of you for making it so successful. Central PA Food Bank is sending a truck to pick up all of the donations you so generously gave. I think this will be an annual event and Thanksgiving the perfect time to hold our drive.

So, as a way of saying thanks a few of our yarn suppliers have graciously donated door prizes and here are the lucky winners! Stop in and pick up your loot!

Happy Thanksgiving

Honey, aka Bob, and I wish all of you a safe, warm and fulfilled Thanksgiving. We take so many things for granted and have so much. Yet we aren't satisfied. I just watched a couple of videos from http://morningswithbrant.com and his trip to Afghanistan with Cure International. It made me really think and to realize I should be satisfied and Happy. Take a moment to watch. You can view them on youtube or facebook or on his link. This is where the 200 hats went and you can see how much good they did.

So now that we are properly thankful, let's move on to other things. Like, how big is your turkey? We provide the turkey and my sister-in-law cooks it. She likes to cook. She was a bit surprised when we told her 20lbs. I have to 'rest up' for our Pay It Forward weekend - lol! But I do make several side dishes. And knit, knit, knit. It's probably the only time I will get for several days.

Today we are starting to decorate the shop. I hate to start before Thanksgiving but there isn't time otherwise. So here goes. La, la, la,la....... Don't get me wrong. I love Christmas - decorations, music, gifts, sweets and all the hoopla. but I think we overlook Thanksgiving. Our Canadian relatives made Thanksgiving in October. then we could have some time to enjoy.

I want also to give a big shout out to SWTC, Jojoland, Knit One, Crochet Too, Claudia Hand Paints and Gloves in a Bottle for their door prizes. We have received some awesome prizes. Makes me wish I was on the other side of the counter. Thanks to all for being so generous. I know my knitters/crocheters will be thrilled.

So, come on out on Friday from 8AM to 8PM or Saturday from 10AM to 4 PM and help the Food Bank too.
